Incoming And Outgoing Hotmail Server Settings

Incoming and Outgoing server settings are required to send and receive emails in your email account. If you are having a problem with the server settings in your Hotmail/Outlook account, you can verify your settings or you can re-configure your email account.

NOTE: As Hotmail.com has been upgraded and re-branded to Outlook.com, the incoming and outgoing server settings will be as per Outlook.com.

Account Type: POP3
Incoming Hotmail (now Outlook) Server Settings: pop3.live.vom
Outgoing Hotmail (now Outlook) Server Settings (SMTP): smtp.live.com

In case you wish to re-configure your email account (example Outlook), you can do so quickly by following the steps mentioned below.

Steps to Configure Outlook.com to Outlook for Windows

Automatic Configuration:

(NOTE: Following steps are for Outlook 2010, 2013, and 2016):

  1. Launch Outlook and go to File > Add Account option. (NOTE: For Outlook 2007, you will need to go to Tools > Account Settings. Select New option in the Email tab.)
  2. Now, for Outlook 2016, enter your email address, then select Connect. For Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010, you will need to select an Email Account and then enter your Name, Email Address, and Password. Select Next.
  3. If asked, enter your password again and then choose OK > Finish to begin using Outlook.

Manual Configuration:

  1. When you are adding the Outlook.com account to Microsoft Outlook, make sure to select “Manual setup or additional server types” on the first screen.
  2. Now, on the next screen, select “POP or IMAP” option and enter the following information in the relevant fields:
    • User Information:
      • Your Name: Enter your name
      • Email address: Enter your email address
    • Server Information:
      • Account type: POP3
      • Incoming mail server: pop3.live.com
      • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.live.com
    • Login Information:
      • User Name: Enter your username
      • Password: Enter your account’s password
  3. Next, go to “More Settings” option and make the following changes:
In the Outgoing Server tab: select the box “My outgoing server (SMTP) required authentication” and “use the same settings as my incoming mail server”.

    • In the Advanced tab, make the following changes:
      • Incoming server (POP3): 995
      • Select checkbox next to “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)”
      • Outgoing server (SMTP): 587
      • Select TLS option for “Use the following types of encrypted connection”.
  4. If you wish to use IMAP protocol instead of POP, you need to follow the same procedure as mentioned above, except that you will need to select IMAP as your email account type instead of POP.
    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Incoming mail server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Login Information
      • User Name: Enter your username
      • Password: Enter your account’s password
  5. Go to the “More Settings” option and make the following changes:
In the Outgoing Server tab: select the box “My outgoing server (SMTP) required authentication” and “use the same settings as my incoming mail server”.

    • In the Advanced tab, make the following changes:
      • Incoming server (POP3): 993
      • Select checkbox next to “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)”
      • Outgoing server (SMTP): 587
      • Select TLS option for “Use the following types of encrypted connection”.
  6. Once you are entering the above information in required fields, click OK and then again click OK.
  7. After that, click “Next” and wait for the “Test Account Settings” to get processed.
  8. If everything gets completed successfully in the “Test Account Settings” box click “Close” and then “Finish”. You can now start using your Outlook.com account with Outlook.

So, these are the incoming and outgoing Hotmail (now Outlook) server settings you need to configure your email account with Outlook. If you need further assistance regarding the above or any other issue in your Outlook account, feel free to get in touch with Hotmail/Outlook customer support service desk.
